Welcome / Introduction

Welcome to season 2008 with Souths United Soccer Club. There have been many changes in the off season such as the returfing of field 1, the soon to be change rooms for field 2, shade areas for the rooball fields plus a lot of general maintenance.

There have also been administrative changes within the committee. That is where I come in. For those who know me bear with me while I introduce myself to those who l don’t. My name is Tony Buckley and I have been elected to the position of Vice President – Women’s Football for Souths United. I am not new to Souths as I have a son who played at the club in the late 1990’s. I have had an interest with women’s football for the past 11 years with a wife and 3 daughters that play football. I have been involved in administration of Women’s Fotball for the last 10 years as either a manager, coach or as a member of the BWSA committee.

For the last 3 years I have been and still am the Chair of the Football Brisbane Women’s Standing Committee. With the changes to the administration of football in Brisbane I found that I needed to be involved in football administration at club level to stay informed of the issues within football and especially women’s football. Over the last 3 years I have not been able to administrate at club level because of my position within the BWSA committee. I have missed this and look forward to assisting the club and players to a successful and enjoyable season.

Season 2008

In season 2008 we are anticipating fielding the following teams:

Premier League and Reserves

Training Starts: Monday 14th January 2008  at 7:00pm

The Premier Squad will be coached by Peter Lugg. Peter is a highly qualified coach with a background in women’s football from Victoria. Peter has been involved with programs run by Football Victoria, Paul Wade and in the preparation of players in FV representative teams. Steve Van Breemen will be the Assistant Squad Coach/ Reserves. Steve has been involved with South’s Premier squad for the last 2 years and will be a valuable asset to the Premier Squad in 2008. There will be a Premier Cup competition run by Football Brisbane which will be a knockout competition including teams from Premier League, Division 1 and hopefully teams from the Sunshine and Gold Coasts. There will be prize money for this competition.

Open Divisions 3 and?

Training Starts: Monday 4th February 2008 at 7:00pm

Football Brisbane is changing the structure of Divisions to 10 teams instead of 8 as it has been for the last few seasons. This will mean that there won’t be a grading cup in 2008 but there will be 3 grading games. The reason for division 3 instead of 4 is because of the change in the size of divisions. With 10 team divisions then there is the need to fill the divisions from the top down. By my calculations with where teams will be placed, that would see most if not all teams from Division 4 last year graded in Division 3 in 2008. With the amount of players interested in playing at Souths in 2008 there may need to be another Senior Women’s divisional team. More will be known when we start training.

Sign On is the first weekend in February (Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd) at Souths United. I will give full timings, costs and procedures as soon as they are available. Div 3 coach for 2008 will be Tony Buckley.  There will be a Metro Cup Competition for women consisting of teams from Division 2 down. There is prize money for this competition and we will be entering teams.

Junior Girls

In season 2008 we are anticipating fielding the following teams:

Under 15 Girls & Under 18 Girls

Training Starts: Wednesday 6th February 2008 at 5:30pm

We are hopeful of having at least 2 Junior teams but the age groups will be determined by numbers and the age span of all the players. We will not rule out having other age groups but realistically this is where we feel we may have the greatest chance of forming teams. We have coaches available to coach these teams but they will be appointed when we have the numbers. If you know of any junior girls wanting to play football we will be more than happy for them to come to Souths whether they are beginners or have played before. Please give any prospective Junior Girls/Parents my contact details that are listed on the left hand side of this newsletter. I look forward to seeing Junior all girl teams back at Souths.
